Intro

To kick this guide off, let's start from the very beginning to make sure you have a clear understanding of what social media is.

In simple terms, social media is just a way that we connect and engage with others online.

As humans, we have always been sociable creatures. We make friends, connect and network in the real world.

Social Media is exactly this, except it's done online, but of course, it doesn't have to stay there.

Online relationships whether it's personal or business become much stronger when we meet in the real world too.

The 'Media' in social media is relevant, in so much that as individuals we are all creating content (media). We are broadcasting updates, images, blogs and so much more.

This media is then engaged with others in a social context. This can take many forms from friends liking your latest family holiday picture, to people who like your latest product.

From a business perspective, it's important to think of social media as your ultimate PR and marketing opportunity.

No longer do you have to rely on old distribution channels (newspapers, magazines, radio, TV) which can cost lots of money. Instead, now you have the opportunity to reach the world at a fraction of the cost.

As the distribution of content is available to everyone, the advertising world has in part become democratised which has had a huge impact on all our lives. Although this is incredibly powerful, it does bring numerous challenges!

There are two broad user groups when it comes to social media; those who consume content and those who create it. Most users do a little of both. But for anyone who is looking to leverage social media for their business, brand, product or service, you need to focus on being a content creator.

In conjunction with the rise of social media and the ongoing shift to online consumerism, there is a huge opportunity for businesses and brands. Data is one aspect but so is the opportunity to connect with your audience and customers on a whole new level.

The opportunities that social media brings, is, of course, one aspect, but with that brings other challenges, not least consumer expectations!

Regardless of whether your business is tuning in and connecting or not, clients are having discussions pertinent to you.

We think it's smarter to be part of that conversation than not!
